Literature Text

If I could write today,
I'd say something about how
It's good to know that the dark can't hold me down
And breathing is nice every know and then.
I'd mention the cold that threatens my toes and fingertips,
The hope and waiting in my heart
The smile at the edges of my lips
For no particular reason.

If I could write, but of course, I can't,
('cause we all know I can only write when I feel dead)
I'd make something deep and haunting and beautiful
Something that stays with you long after you close your eyes
Something quiet yet insistent
Something as believable as lies
I'd say something that you hear like a song
That follows you through the day
Even after you beg it to be still.

If...if I could write at all, I'd take what I feel and make it real
I'd have respectable fame and gumption to get things done, I really would.
I'd draw pictures with words;
You'd see things you've never heard of
Yet remember from a dream you once had as a child.
I'd write poems and love letters and prose,
I'd make you see perfect beauty
Crystallized in a singled piercing note.
I'd write a long book;
One that stays on the shelf gathering dust,
Waiting for someone
Who has the patience to read the whole thing
The kind that keeps going when you want it to,
The kind that satisfies when you turn the last page,
That fills you like a good meal.

If I could write, I'd be something...but we all know that I can't.
